Over 100 Mercedes residents gathered downtown to observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, 2019.

The ceremony included a 21-gun salute by the McAllen Police Honor Guard, as well as the playing of TAPS by Isaiah Murillo. The Mercedes Army JROTC also laid a wreath at the foot of the Mercedes Veterans War Memorial.

The wreath was made to honor five local veterans, incluind Wolrd War I veteran Frank Buckles; Medal of Honor recipient Robert “Bob: Maxwell; Capt. Rosemary Mariner, the first woman to pilot a tactical fighter jet; Navajo code talker Chester Naz; and the oldest veteran of record in Mercedes, Jesse de la Fuente, who died earlier this year.

Residents were invited to leave roses at the base of the memorial, as well as in an array of memorial crosses which bore the names of Rio Grande Valley veterans killed while on active duty.
