Powerlifter college bound

Weslaco High’s Samantha Villarreal awarded full scholarship to Louisiana Tech

Weslaco High School senior Samantha Villarreal made her dream become a reality as she signed a letter of intent to Louisiana Tech on a full powerlifting scholarship Tuesday afternoon at Weslaco High.

"Words can't describe how I feel right now," said Villarreal. "Louisiana Tech is among the top powerlifting schools in the country and I get the opportunity to go there and showcase my talents."

Villarreal, who is in her first year of powerlifting, brought home the gold by winning numerous local meets and winning regionals and a chance to compete at the state level.

Villarreal placed second in the state and competed in Louisiana at the national tournament and placed seventh in her weight class.

"Who would have thought that a girl, much less a girl with only one year of experience, could accomplish so much," said Weslaco High School powerlifting coach Raul Villarreal. "Samantha is a very special breed of athlete because she puts forth so much effort in this sport and now is being rewarded with a full scholarship. Now, she will compete at a school that has 10 national powerlifting championships and the top coach in the nation."

"I am so proud of her and all she has accomplished in one year. She has definitely set the bar high for the other girls here at Weslaco High."

Villarreal said that she can't wait to get to Louisiana Tech and showcase her talents.

"I am so ready to get to Louisiana and start training," said Villarreal. "I really liked it there when I visited and am ready for the new challenges that are ahead of me."

Is this story true? I have been a part of the Louisiana Tech powerlifting team since 2005, and I have never heard about the above mentioned in all my years on the team. Plus, there are no powerlifting scholarships at the collegiate level because we are not NCAA affiliated.
