Molina headlines card
HARLINGEN - Weslaco native Eric Molina is like a little kid in a candy store as he anxiously awaits his opportunity to shine in the boxing ring Saturday night at the Harley Davidson shop in McAllen.
Molina (5-1, 5 KO's) will headline the card as he faces Louisiana's Anthony Greeley (7-27-3) in a six round cruiserweight main event as part of the Budweiser Boxing Series promoted by Cavazos Boxing.
"I am pumped up and excited about being in the main event Saturday night," said Molina. "I am going to take this fight to a different level and make a statement. But, I am not going to take Greeley lightly. Even though he has a losing record, he has faced some tough opponents and I am going to have my hands full."
"But, I have been training hard and feel real good coming into Saturday night. I am ready to put the pro gloves on already."
Omar Figueroa, Molina's trainer, said that he feels Eric is primed and ready to destroy his opponent in the ring.
"Eric is just a natural puncher and he was popping the mitts real hard this week," said Figueroa. "In fact, my arms are still sore from all of the hard punches he has thrown. I tried to tell Eric to take it easy and slow down, but he knows only one speed. I feel that he can drop his opponent with just one punch."
Anthony Cavazos, president of Cavazos Boxing, said that Molina has quite a following and expects the crowd at the Harley Davidson shop in McAllen will be electric.
"Whenever Eric steps in the ring, people absolutely go nuts," said Cavazos. "He has become a fan favorite in the valley and people come out just to watch him and support him. Eric comes to fight in every match he is in and I expect the same thing on Saturday night. There will be a lot of vibration and it will not be the vibration of the motorcycles, but the roar of the crowd."
In other action, Weslaco's Omar Molano (5-1-1, 5 KO's) will face San Antonio's Gilbert Elizondo (4-1, 2 KO's) in the co-main event and Weslaco's Manuel Lopez (3-2, 3 KO's) will make his triumphant return after a 17-month lay-off and will face San Antonio's Joseph Rios (3-2, 1 KO) in the featured bout.
The undercard features Weslaco's Omar Figueroa Jr. making his pro debut as he will face Brownsville's Edwin Espinoza (0-1). Two women will make their pro debut as McAllen's Maria Salinas will face San Antonio's Stephanie Gonzales. The opening bout of the evening will feature San Antonio's Ramiro Torres (3-11-1) against Jesse Ortiz (3-8-2), also from San Antonio.
