Library adds art fair to book sale event
WESLACO — The Friends of the Weslaco Public Library thought it was time to put a new take on an old tradition.
In an effort to attract more participants, organizers of the library's annual used book sale have added an art fair to the event scheduled for Thursday and Friday in the library's courtyard garden.
Used book sale and art fair coordinator Cindy Willson said the art fair should help the public library sell hundreds of used books ranging from mysteries to gardening how-tos priced as low as $1.
"There are literally truck loads of books that people are not buying at these bargain prices," she said. "Anything we can do to put books on someone's hands is a good thing."
As part of the art fair, talented local artists will display an array of crafts including carvings, oil and acrylic paintings, retablos, glass and textile art.
Exotic orchids from Hawaii will also be available for purchase, Willson said.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of the Library and the group's theater project, Willson said.
The event, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday will also be used to promote the Eugene A. Braught Theatre, Willson said.
