Library names new ‘friends' as officers
WESLACO — A new slate of officers was named to the Friends of the Weslaco Public Library board earlier this month.
In the annual meeting on Jan. 12, Christine Warren was named president, while Walter Heid was tabbed vice president, Anne Charlton secretary and Barbara Heid as treasurer. The group will work in cooperation and conjunction with city officials to host a variety of events at the Eugene A. Braught Theater.
In 2009, the Friends of the Weslaco Public Library are planning a number of evening and weekend events for the theater, organizers said.
Warren said in the past, city officials planned the events with the help of library employees and volunteers.
With new officers and a new system dedicated to planning events for the theater, Warren said the community will see more planned in the near future.
"We're looking to make this cultural hub for the community and provide a wide range of things," Warren said. "We want to have a wide variety of programs on as many days as possible with resources."
In the coming months, the organization has already a number of events planned for the theater and the library itself.
On Feb. 19-20, the library will host its semi-annual used books sale along with an art fair in the courtyard garden. Also, environmental entertainer and songwriter Joyce Johnson Rouse, nicknamed Earth Mama, is scheduled to perform a benefit concert at the theater in February.
Warren said the Friends of the Library group is ready to step up to the challenge of making the library and the theater a focal point of the community.
"It's going to be a lot of work though," Warren said. "Our goal is to add resources to the library."
