TBEC recognizes WISD schools
WESLACO — Weslaco Independent School District continues its roll as a state-recognized school district.
The Texas Business & Education Coalition recently added three WISD schools to its honor roll list: Weslaco High School, Memorial and Airport Drive Elementary. The honor roll is based on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.
TBEC recognizes schools whose students meet state standards on all TAKS subjects including reading, writing, math and science. Students at Memorial Elementary averaged a score of 97 percent in all subjects edging out Airport Elementary who had 96 percent.
All three schools were chosen out of 8,000 Texas public schools. The nod from TBEC marked the third consecutive year Memorial Elementary received the Honor Roll.
Former Memorial Elementary Principal and current Assistant Superintendent Ana Oliveira was thrilled for her former campus and the other Weslaco ISD schools to be recognized.
"What can I say, it makes me feel proud to be part of this district," Oliveira said. "I have people that are willing to go the extra mile. I was fortunate and privileged to have the staff members that I had at Memorial Elementary."
Weslaco High School Principal Isidoro Nieto said the recognition came as a shock to him and his staff.
"We were surprised when we received the award." All the work from administrators, staff members, teachers and counselors has really paid off the three years we have been here. This school is one of the elite. Only four percent of schools in Texas get recognized. When parents see that, they know Weslaco high School is an excellent school."
Ten of Superintendent Richard Rivera's 12 years at WISD have been served in a recognized district, he said.
"It's a big honor," he said. "I'm very proud of all the schools in our district and these three for being selected."
TBEC will have an awards reception Nov. 10 in San Antonio to honor the schools. Rivera is not sure if he will be present, but mentioned that faculty and principals from the three recognized campuses will stand to receive their awards.
"Based on our size percentage, we have more (schools recognized) than any other in Region I," Rivera said.

| Oliveira said. "I was fortunate and privileged to have the staff members that I had at Memorial Elementary."
Yes you were Oliveira especially when you hired your family members and paid them with tax payers money when they were not even working.
Oh yeah and thank you for returning all the items you purchased for your home with tax payers money as well.
You are a joke in the education community and not just in Weslaco or the Rio Grande Valley. Educators across the state have been forwarding e-mails non-stop with jokes about you and questions about your lack of professionalism.
Weslaco is now mentioned up there with the great Texas ISD's like PSJA and Donna. |
