McDonald House to host golf tourney
WESLACO - Ronald McDonald House of the Rio Grande Valley is holding its Fourth Annual Red Shoe Classic Golf Tournament, which will be held on Oct. 11 at Tierra Santa Golf Club.
The tournament is sponsored by South Texas Health Care and all proceeds will go to the Ronald McDonald House. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for $1,000 per team.
Ronald McDonald House Rio Grande Valley Executive Director Gayle Reger said the organization is looking for as many as 44 teams to participate in a three-person scramble. Tee time is set for 8 a.m.
Reger said the goal this year is to raise $80,000, double the amount raised in last year's event.
"All the money is saved to serve families," she said. "Any child needing hospital care, their families can stay at our house while the child is in the hospital."
Reger said the organization currently has a house in Harlingen and has plans to expand throughout the Valley in the coming months.
Reger said much of the money would be used to help open more homes near local hospitals in addition to covering operating expenses.
"A lot of families can't afford to pay for our rooms," Reger said.
Reger said there will be prizes during the event, which will feature a putting contest sponsored by the RGV Vipers, a Tiger Woods drive contest and a raffle.
The first place winner will get a trophy and a $500 gift card. Second place wins a trophy and $300 gift card, while third place takes the bronze trophy and a $200 gift card.
